I am a regular commentator on the national political scene as part of my role as Chair of the Social Liberal Forum and as a regular contributor to Lib Dem Voice. I have a policy focus on transport, rural affairs and education and have a track record of delivery in these areas.
In rural affairs, I am a proven campaigner on a whole variety of issues, from local transport, local education and local service delivery. I live in Nidderdale and am passionate about the rural economy and its future.
In education, I have written and coordinated booklets that have been instrumental in policy changes within the Lib Dem Party. Most recently I coordinated the Social Liberal Forum booklet: “21st Century Education” . This is a collection of articles by Liberal Democrats who are passionate about education, most of whom are experienced teaching professionals. My sincere hope is that some day in the not too distant future, some of our radical policy proposals will finally make it into legislation. The booklet can be accessed on this link http://www.ldea.co.uk/ideas/21st-century-education
In transport, I am chair of a Government initiative to get better transport in rural areas www.dalesconnect.net. We are a voluntary, community-led group working directly with communities. We have come up with many innovative schemes, including the “One Way £1 Fare” for under-19s on all bus routes in the Yorkshire Dales. My hope is that a national scheme for low price bus travel for young people eventually makes it into legislation, and I am lobbying hard for this to happen.
As a former member of the Federal Policy Committee of the Lib Dems, I have a broad overview of all policy areas, and I would love to put this knowledge to good use for my local area.
The simple fact is, I know I could make a difference, locally and nationally. And I have the track record to prove it.
